ATTENTION credit crunched, tight pursed, budget minded fashionistas, this is an announcement: you do not have to starve yourself of good fashion even in the face of the pre-pay day personal recession which hits every month. I present to you the affordable vintage fashion market touring the UK right under your noses. I’m not talking chunky wool knit jumpers marked up to £35 because it’s “vintage 1980s”, neither am I talking dresses for £28 in the style of vintage on eBay. All clothes are weighed by the KILO, meaning a light cotton t-shirt could potentially cost you no more than £5.
My first encounter of such an event started in Brick Lane with Judy’s Vintage Kilo sale which has now collaborated with the Vintage Clothing Kilo Sale to produce a fusion of the most epic tour of vast tons of smelly but equally glorious vintage clothing.
Not one to brave the masses at midday I made sure I arrived first thing to ensure I could do a rapid and swift scour of all of the good clothes. On my hunt I found an Adidas jacket, a wonderful sequiny shrug (no doubt heavy = expensive) and a heck of alot of ’70s dresses. The atmosphere picked up in no time and in no time, ladies and gents were foraging through boxes of clothes, from time to time ladies would pick up opposite ends of a garment – for a split second, a game of tug of war was on the cards until they just dropped the garment and moved onto the clothes rail. There were all walks of life attending this event, young and old, male and female. In one section of the room, standing infront of full length mirrors were girls holding up hangers weighing up the fit of the garment, while some were trying on crazy patterned bomber jackets as their friends critiqued the garment and looked for potential stains.
The event really wasn’t that savage, I’ve added extra drama for the sake of the blog post. Everyone was so friendly, including the team co-ordinating the event (see picture at bottom!) and the shoppers were all in a great frame of mind. I purchased two dresses, a tshirt, jumper and cardigan all for a tidy £24. I thought I’d snap a few pictures of the whole thing…
The event space at the Paintworks.
