Having successfully defended the UFC Welterweight title in a fight against Jorge Masvidal, kamaru Usman said that he dreams of competing with the former champion of the division, George St. Pierre, and the legendary canadian did not ignore the challenge addressed to him.

“I saw this fight and Usman looked amazing,” the UFC Hall of Fame member told TMZ. “He had a great and very smart match. Everyone talks about his physical strength and skills, but I think his best quality is his brain. He is an extremely smart fighter. It becomes the perfect retribution for every opponent, and shows perfect fights. He is an incredible fighter, and will go very far. If he continues in this way, he will become one of the best fighters in history”

Unfortunately for Usman, Saint-Pierre does not plan to return to the octagon for a fight with him.

“I’ve been doing this for too long, and unfortunately there are a lot of guys in my sport who couldn’t leave on time, and I don’t want to be one of them. I was lucky – I’m healthy, rich, and left just when I needed to. I’ve made a lot of money, and now, when I think about the pros and cons, I think it’s better for me to stay retired.”

Earlier, the former UFC champion in two weight categories repeatedly said that he would resume his career only for the sake of a fight with the current UFC lightweight title holder Khabib Nurmagomedov.

Cody Garbrandt asks for a lightweight title fight

It seems that the former UFC lightweight champion, Cody Garbrandt, who occupies the third line in the division, is not too interested in a fight with Peter Yan, and prefers to go down to the lightest weight category to challenge Daveson Figueredo.

Given the fact that the organization is not in a hurry to call the number one contender in the lightest weight neither Marlon Moraes nor Aljamain Sterling, it would seem that now is the time for the American to actively participate in the promotion of a likely fight with the Russian champion, but for some reason Garbrandt suddenly lost interest in the title race in 135 pounds, switching his interest to the lightest division.

“125 pounds, let’s go! Dana white, Sean Shelby, Mick Maynard, ” Garbrandt wrote on Instagram, demonstrating to the UFC management that even in the off-season, his weight only slightly exceeds 145 pounds.

We will remind that on July 18 at UFC Fight Night 172 in Abu Dhabi, Daveson Figueredo finished Joseph Benavidez in the first round, having won the vacant UFC title in the lightest weight, and Cody Garbrandt in June knocked out Rafael Assunsao, taking the third place in the rating of the lightest division of the UFC.
